Divine Intervention

Ryan liked working most when the weather out was cloudy. In the construction business, it always helped for the heat to take a hike for a few hours. However, he found himself feeling almost as overcast as the weather the next day.

As he worked soldiering the iron frame of a rising skyscraper into place, his hands automatically went through the motions as his thoughts wandered.

What had been wrong with him lately?

Two or three years ago, a conquest like the one he'd had the previous night would have given him a high that lasted for days. Now, he'd gone through two women in the same week. It wasn't that he didn't think highly of the fairer sex; indeed, he had as much respect and appreciation for woman as any man worth his mettle should. Women were powerful – if they had you by the heart and balls, then there was no getting away.

While he'd, unfortunately, found himself in a few ball–grips over the past decade, Ryan had never been one to give his heart away. He was in no rush to get married and settle down. On the contrary, where most of his friends had posted wedding and baby pictures to the internet, at 33, Ryan was still posting photos with women he'd met in bars. Sure he'd gotten teased for it one or two times, but he just never felt that he'd met a woman that he was ready to give up his freedom for.

A low vibration from his jean pocket caught his attention and he turned off his equipment for a moment to extract his phone. There was a message from Lisa, one of his oldest and closest friends. She'd been the first girl ever to kick his ass in high school and, as a martial arts instructor, she was probably still very capable of repeating the act. She was also married. This put her in the situation of being one of the only of his female friends that Ryan could trust to be completely objective about most matters involving dating.

Most.

He scanned the message quickly.

How'd last night go?

At the mere memory, he groaned lowly. Sure, Miranda had been hot, but like other women he'd taken to bed, she'd also been a bit too curious for his tastes.

I think I've hit a snag. Lately the one–nighters haven't been doing it for me.

Typing his reply was slightly complicated wearing thick protective gloves, but he managed. The last thing he needed was for his boss to come over and ask why he'd neglected his gear on the job site.

What a surprise. You're 33, Ry. Could it be that you're finally craving some commitment?

He could practically hear the smugness oozing from the woman's voice as he read her reply. He could do little but glare at the phone as he commenced once more with his unwieldy typing.

I think after a decade you'd know me better. I think I'm just losing my groove.

As the foreman started for his section of the job site, he slid his phone back into his pocket before resuming his work.
